Very c ool.
I still don’t understand how doing this gesture is better. Since the the control buttons are an inch away from your hand and you could have pressed just as easily.

I
f these
gestures
controlled the turn signals
maybe BMW owners would use them.

That’s cool and all but why can’t we just have a car with fully integrated voice controls? If we could just tell our cars “change audio input to bluetooth” or “set climate to 72°” instead of taking our eyes off the road it would prevent a lot of accidents.

Google Home for your car?

I feel you. It’s a cool gimmick . It reminds me of Xbox’s Kinect or Wii’s wiimote, but people were just fine and happy with the regular controller.
I will say, showing people this in person has wooed them.

That makes sense.

Yeah but able to access any user-operable system of the car. Most vehicles I’ve encountered with voice commands restrict it to just n avigation and phone.

I’m trying not to be dazzled by the wow factor, but this is really neat! Much better than touchscreen controls, potentially . So d oes it always need you to use clear, exaggerated hand motions, or will it respond to more casual, subtle gesturing? And does it have to be done at close range, or will it detect your hand when it’s back near the arm rest?
Also, how responsive does it feel? At 0:12 in the video, i t looks like it took about one full finger-circle before the volume would go up , then another 1.5 circles in reverse to make it go back down again. But at 0:22, it took 2 finger-circles to turn the volume up again.

lol so many safeguards need to be put in place

I will say it will never be perfect. A nob/button will be the only perfect version.
It is safer. Instead of looking down for a button when a deer or a kid can come into the road, you can just look forward and twirl your finger/hand.

It is astounding that full voice commands hasn’t taken over yet. Mercedes has it with “Hey Mercedes”
I’d say with will be THE standard in 5 years.

Thank you for your contribution. I also try to fight it

That seems a bit too much. It doesn’t need web connectivity or a personality or an activation phrase. Just a button on the steering wheel will do.

Yeah a thumb activation button would make much more sense than saying “hey Mercedes”. And a simple confirmation chime would be fine.

The volume control is pretty sweet.

Eventually, but seems like the tech isn’t quite there yet (unless automakers decide to license from Google/Amazon/Apple).
